Two Artist residencies in Kražiai, from 1 to 30 October, 2015

The historic village of Kražiai (North-West Lithuania) stepped into the world of photography through a documentary project “Portrait of Kražiai” (2001-2003) by the to-become KAUNAS PHOTO festival’s founder and director Mindaugas Kavaliauskas. The exhibitions of “Portrait of Kražiai” have visited galleries, museums and festivals across Europe, also in China, Australia. The work keeps on being exhibited. In 2009, “Portrait of Kražiai” saw the light of the day in form of a book. Pictures of Kražiai, mostly taken in 2002, represent the village in transition, torn apart by economic struggle, growing migration, ageing population and the hopes of the reviving of the glorious past in the new Europe-bound Lithuania. The building of Kražiai college from the 17th century, photographed by Mindaugas Kavaliauskas in 2002 in course of its reconstruction, now is a splendid multicultural palace, which hosts the M.K.Sarbievijus Kražiai Cultural Centre with an art gallery and other facilities. It becomes the epicentre of the Kražiai festival every August.
